CREATING CHANGE THROUGH CUTTING EDGE LEGAL ADVOCACY

We connect local women’s organisations to national and global centres of power — government officials, corporate managers, law enforcement authorities, intergovernmental organisations, multilateral institutions, international monitoring bodies and UN oversight mechanisms — and support them to engage in critical dialogue and hard-hitting evidence-based legal advocacy.

GLOBAL ADVOCACY MODEL

Sisters For Change has a five-step model to global advocacy. By advocating for improved implementation of national laws, reforming discriminatory legislation and increasing resources to combat violence against women, we can ensure that domestic laws and international frameworks to combat violence against women become real at the grassroots.

Generating evidence & building networks of champions

Our legal advocacy initiatives are underpinned with rigorous evidence and data collection, and delivered through building collaborative advocacy networks to champion change.

Informing policy & supporting legislative reform

We conduct comprehensive reviews of domestic and international laws and policies relating to violence against women — as well as national crime records and budget policies — to enable us to make stronger recommendations to support legislative reform.

Improving implementation of national law

We monitor cases using the Sisters For Change Due Diligence Wheel to identify where States are failing to comply with their obligations to combat and investigate violence against women and advocate for improved implementation of national and state laws.

Strengthening international monitoring architecture

We publish the findings of our evidence collection and case analysis and submit independent reports to national and international oversight mechanisms, including Human Rights Commissions, Equality Commissions, Women’s Commissions, Labour Commissions, UN CEDAW & CERD Committees and UN Special Rapporteurs.

Disseminating information and ideas

We disseminate our reports, convene roundtables and high-level political dialogues, and provide expert technical assistance and advice in combatting violence against women to national governments, civil society organisations and corporate bodies.
